Delegation Overview
In order to start sending emails, you will first need to delegate a subdomain to iPost.
Your subdomain is used to:
- Tell other mail servers where to report delivery problems.
- Give recipients and inbox providers confidence in the source of your email.
- Capture interactions with your messages, providing you with response metrics.
- Automatically filter replies sent by recipients of your email, thereby saving you effort.
What is a subdomain?
There are typically two parts to a domain: the top-level domain (TLD) is the extension (e.g., .com, .net) and the second-level domain (SLD) is the unique domain name (e.g., the 'ipost' in ipost.com).
The subdomain goes before the SLD and is commonly used to identify a section of the main site.

We recommend keeping the subdomain name short to keep down the length of the URL in the text version of the mailing; e.g., if the company name is example.com, you might use a subdomain name of news.example.com.
Delegation Options
There are four options available for providing a subdomain for use in iPost mailings:
- Name Service (NS) Delegation: this is the preferred method for comprehensive brand identity across all email process steps.
- Canonical Name Aliasing (CNAME): applicable when registrars or DNS hosts do not allow "NS" records for delegation and provide similar benefits; however, there are some limitations.
- Certain ESPs may reveal the iPost-managed name (target), e.g., Gmail may display 'target.ip03.com' instead of 'yoursub.domain.com'.
- Unlike when setting up NS delegation, where iPost handles DKIM and SPF automatically, these TXT records must be added manually.
- In addition to the above records, installing an SSL certification requires a CAA record (required) and an additional CNAME record be added to the same server that hosts the existing CNAME record. Please consult with your IT team to determine if these can be added.
- CNAME delegations do not support Google Postmaster tools or Yahoo Sender Hub.
- Client-Hosted Name Service: All DNS records are stored at your registrar or DNS provider.
- This is not recommended due to potential disruptions and communication challenges. Prior approval by our Technical team is required and hourly charges apply.
- New Domain Registration: register a new domain with complete control assigned to iPost.
- This method is also not recommended as it can increase suspicion by ISPs (e.g., may be perceived as a phishing attempt), resulting in a negative impact to deliverability.
- Additionally, any subdomains can only be created in iPost's DNS, restricting any use of the domain's second or third level subdomains.
